Rectangular (laboratory) and circular (Auditorium) four-story reinforced concrete structure with full height atrium and bridge connecting two structures. Unique project features: exposed structural steel truss wall and roof trusses at the atrium space. Restrictive vibration and user adaptability requirements led to conventional reinforced concrete flat plate, concrete shear wall and column framing on the laboratory portion. Larger auditorium space in the circular building dictated the use of cantilevered radial deep beam with fewer columns at the building core with the post tensioned flat slab framing to the outer circumferential columns.

The scope of the structural engineering work includes the design of all elements to safely renovate the existing building and carry the required loads to the foundation system.  Structural loads as defined in the Florida Building Code include all applicable dead, live, and wind loads which will be applied to the structure.  We used the appropriate factors for essential facilities to ensure building performance and safety in times of extreme structural demand such as hurricanes.  This building space was renovated to relate esthetically with the neighboring campus buildings, to meet current accreditation, codes and sustainability goals. This project received LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.
