4 story medical building that included several unusual architectural features. An oval shaped glass clad wing with 50 ft clear spans allowing for vehicle traffic under the 3rd floor. One end of the 50 ft span is supported by the rectangular wing of the building, the other end is supported by a smaller cast-in-place concrete half-oval shearwall. The other half of the oval is encased in steel supported glass. A large screen wall the height of the building and spanning between the new Cancer Center building and the existing Airport Medical Office Building. The structure is steel framed with composite floor decking. Cast-in-place concrete walls around the stair wells and elevator shafts act as the shear walls for the building. The oval shape was achieved by cantilevering beams of different lengths over the 50 ft span lengths. A mass pour concrete "vault" is attached to the building, the thicker walls and slabs needed for the sensitive equipment in side.

The floor structure consists of light-weight concrete on composite metal deck supported by composite steel beams. A shallow foundation of concrete footings supports the building. Light-gauge steel wall studs clad the building. The main entrance is covered by an impressive cantilevered canopy made of concrete columns and exposed steel beams. Being an essential use facility, the structure was designed using an Importance factor of 1.15 and wind pressures were increased by 15%.

A 5,150 sf, 2 story addition to the NICU of Sacred Heart Hospital. Because of a loading dock beneath the neonatal care addition, there were limited places for columns. As a result, the structure clear spans 88 ft. by utilizing a heavy structural steel truss. It is designed for one future floor and a roof. Further complicating the structure was a low floor to floor height limiting the structural depth to 14”, thus there are transfer beams carrying closely spaced columns to limit the spans. The floor was designed to limit vibrations due to the nature of the occupancy.

Fresenius Medical Centers

Joe DeReuil Associates has been the Engineer of Record on several medical clinics for Fresenius Kidney Care. Each clinic is customized to meet the Architect's vision and desired functionality.  The buildings are single-story, either structural steel framed with light gauge stud infill or completely timber framed. Several are clad in brick and stone veneer with large glazed wall openings.  Foundations were customized to meet the load-carrying capacity of the site, with those located in South Louisiana area requiring a timber pile/concrete grade beam/monolithic slab foundation.
